What we saw on the way in Nova Scotia - Karl Chronicles - Post #12

It took Karl approximately four days by bicycle to travel the 120 km through Nova Scotia to the New Brunswick border. Although Karl managed to travel about 40 km a day, the road conditions were such that he often couldn’t ride his bike and instead had to walk his bicycle, taking him longer than initially anticipated.

In his first letter to the Truro Daily News, he wrote: “Leaving Truro on my trip around the globe on the 11th, I naturally felt a little blue, but I outgrew it all in a few hours.” I wonder in those moments of feeling blue if Karl reconsidered his plans, knowing he had a whopping 60,000 km remaining on his journey and much more challenging terrain and roads to navigate than what he encountered in Nova Scotia.

But he didn’t change his plans, and I for one am so grateful for his plucky perseverance.

It also took me approximately four days to travel by car the 120 km through Nova Scotia to the New Brunswick border. Although technically a mere 75-minute drive, my original quest to merely photograph the places Karl visited quickly morphed into a discovery of local history requiring much more time in each location. Consequently, I gained knowledge and garnered information that gives me a greater appreciation of my home province and new meaning to the images I captured.

The following summarizes where we went and What We Saw On The Way on Leg 1 of our journey following Karl through Nova Scotia. I hope you continue with me next week as we start Leg 2 of our travels to New Brunswick.
